Your figures are absolutely right...

Nov 03, 2004,04:04 AM

Hi Velociphile,
sorry for checking in lately in this discussion.
I asked for the acceleration and he (the tester) said it's 5000g.
I couldn't believe that but after thinking a bit longer and asking again I thought it might be correct(as you know my french is very poor). Now, after your calculations I'm sure I got it right.
Indeed the bumper is made from teflon:

As the first shown test hits the case sideways between the lugs, the second one was even more impressive:

And here it goes.....

Unbelievable, but the crystal wasn't damaged, although the "tester" admitted that sometimes it simply breaks.
According JLC any watch (model) is tested the same way, even gold encased ones (interestingly the teflon bumper doesn't leave the gold case damaged as well, again according JLC).
Really impressive test and leaves some reported figures about incredibly shock resistent Tourbillons of other make seeming a bit in another category - these ones standed a "test" during a F1 accident with reported appr. 120g undamaged - not very impressive anymore compared to the 5000g

Best regards
Suitbert

PuristS trip to MJLC - part 1, my first Gyro experience at 12,000 ft.

 By: Jaw : November 1st, 2004-07:07
By the time I arrived at Singapore Changi Airport for my flight on the twenty- fifth evening, I had gone over all the logistic work in my mind at least a million times. (Pre- flight snacks) (1) In choosing the most enthusiastic 16 out of 35 responses to e...

Have you seen the Gyro?

Share your experience here ... Jaw

Yes indeed...

 By: Suffian : November 8th, 2004-12:12
I for one have seen the Gyro twice. The first was during Tempus in Singapore & the second was during MJLC's exhibition in KLCC, Malaysia. On both occassions, the Gyro left me just standing in front of it staring in amazement. It is indeed a mind-boggeling...

Harmony indeed...

 By: Jaw : November 8th, 2004-01:01
A CNA television producer told me her video shot of Gyro mesmerised the CNA team (mind you, not watch nuts)...someone actually mentioned that this is sure to give the wearer the perfect Feng Shui.. Jaw

New Marketing Angle

 By: Duncan Wang : November 10th, 2004-02:14
Not that JLC needs any help in marketing the Gyro, but it would be something new to say that a watch brings the wearer perfect feng shui! The "Perfect Feng Shui Watch" would be a big seller in Asia! As for the Gyro, you already know my feelings about the ...

pressurization probably brings cabin to about 5000 feet equivalent.

I did noticed the altitude indicated on the flight plan was as high as 12,000... Thanks!

Meter... But there?s a more surprising point...

 By: PeterCDE : November 2nd, 2004-07:07
It?s stunning to see you really do notice anything else when wearing a Gyrotourbillon! How could that happen? For a 747, typical cruise altitude is 35,000 feet (10 668 m); so 12.000m sounds reasonable (i think max. altitude for a fully loaded 747-400 is a...

The thing about the trousers...

 By: 219 : November 6th, 2004-09:21
is that from distance, they look a dull red. Any Italian or Englishman would tell you that red trousers are an essential part of any gentlemen's wardrobe. However, at close range, you can see the detail of the pattern. The pattern is almost arabic/norther...

That's certainly an interesting way to look at those shock testing figures. I'd be more interested to learn the decceleration figures, or power dissipated by the test, too. For example, dropping the watch from 5 meters onto a nice soft cushion is quite di...

Shock as opposed to energy....

By: Velociphile - No longer in the building : November 2nd, 2004-02:14
Absolutely agree..... I was trying to contextualise the energy involved. In order to calculate the acceleration of the watches under test it's a different issue. In the test, the shock is passed to the watch pretty directly via a hard polymer bumper. Unfo...

Ok, let?s go a bit deeper: Interestingly, we can estimate the exit speed of a 100 g watch from elastic collision calculations at about 7.5 m/s (about 27 kph or 17 mph). It carries away 2.8 Joules, more than half the energy of the striking mass. However, t...
