THE Jaeger Lecoultre Geophysic all the fans dream to find....

Jun 23, 2015,00:00 AM

Please, allow me to tease you  bit before unveiling what I have to  show you...

It is related to this well known leaflet.

To help you to guess, I will post now the detailed pictures used in this leaflet.

- The Admiral Frederick B Warder offering the Geophysic to the Commanders William R Anderson, on the right, and J.F Calvert, on the left, during a ceremony on the 16th of December, 1958.

- The Geophysic with its " Sputnik " box, and its paper.

- The USS Nautilus ( Commander Anderson ).

- The USS Skate - Commander Calvert ).

Now, what do you think I had the opportunity to see?

Commander Anderson's Geophysic!

The JLC Heritage Gallery had the opportunity to include in its collection this historical piece.

My surprise was to learn that this Watch was in yellow gold! I always thought that it was in steel, maybe because of the black and white pictures, such as those posted above.

You can read, engraved all around the case back : " From the citizen of Geneva to U.S.S Nautilus Commander W.R Anderson  in recognition of the historic conquest of the North Pole in August 4th 1958. "

Which is interesting is to know or learn that the Commander J.F Calvert's Geophysic has the same mentions, engraved on its case back, but with a different date: August 11th, 1958.

This Geophysic lost its sticker, after all these years on Commander Anderson's wrist.

The Heritage Gallery won't restore this Watch. It will be kept in this condition, as a witness of this glorious moment and piece of the Manufacture History.

For every Geophysic Fan, being able to see that time keeper is a fantastic moment, which I wanted to share with all of you.

Best,

Nicolas.

.. Is still one of these symbols of times, long gone, but somehow reaching up & touching us here and now ! One a few tiny Qs: were the original leaflets in French only, or were there English versions ? Has there been one of the Sputnik - boxes preserved &...

Now you understand how thrilled I was when the HG brought me this watch!

As for your questions, now.... It seems that there was an English version of the leaflet: I don't have the rest of the booklet, sadly. As for the Sputnik box, for me, as far as I know, there were only 2, for the Commanders' watches. I mean two available, ...

Thx kindly.. Really a welcome remembering of pioneering achievements

.. as per to the concomitant epiphemalia for the new Tributes 1958 versions it was a nice JLC sentiment, IMHO, to provide the little round folder/booklet & tag to go together.. Thx agan for this revelating share, my friend ! Really a nice set.. LGM did a ...

I was waiting for the SIHH fury to calm down, before posting it... But since I took this Watch in picture, in January, I was tempted more than once to put it on line. ;) Best, Nicolas

Quite extraordinary indeed!!!!!.....

I notice that the case is in yellow gold whilst the crown seems to be in steel. Was it originally made this way? Thank you for this page of history. Cheers Francois

this was my morning reading. Do you know a bit more about the finding of this piece of history?

Yes, JLC was in contact with Commander Anderson's family.

 By: amanico : June 23rd, 2015-02:58
For the rest, JLC wants to keep it private. But it is a long work, and a big satisfaction. Best, Nicolas

is that the whole family of the commander wears Jaeger Lecoultre Duomètre enamel from the small Johann 1 year until 75 years old granny Ginette ?

To my information

 By: Tyo : June 23rd, 2015-03:38
granny Ginette is single.... no one will charge you for this arrangement. I can witness this union To get back to this Geophysic I find this watch so beautiful, less is more, that's a pity that the tribute doesn't have the same dial ( except the platinum ...

The size being 35 mm, it is a bit small, for most of the people.

Not for the Lucky PuristS who are Lucky to enjoy their vintage. ;) As for the dial, the crosshairs is beautiful, I will have to show you mine, next time we meet. Best, Nicolas

I would love to see the movement of thIs one...

the case looks in very good shape. Has the manufacture taken the back off? Does it still work? Love the post, Nicolas Best Joe

I didn't dare asking them. Next time, maybe?

The case has been used. But that adds a lot to the charm of this Watch. Best, Joe. Nicolas

Nicolas, Thanks for the memories. I do remember how the Nautilus trip under the Pole made my boy mind excited. It was "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (Jules Verne) made real! And the watch is ... alive, after all those years! Cheers, Nilo

Yes, even if he didn't wear it during his adventure, you can imagine...

 By: amanico : June 23rd, 2015-07:14
All the moments he lived with that Watch on his wrist. Its condition says it all! Best, Nilo. Nicolas

Amazing condition. I'm glad it will not be restored...

 By: MichaelC : June 23rd, 2015-06:44
And instead preserved. What a treat to see up close for you! Thanks for sharing it on PuristSPro!

Well the dial is not in terrific condition, but it is part of the history of the watch.

What an amazing piece of history...to have THE JLC Geophysic A terrific opportunity for JLC to secure this piece, and for you to see it in the flesh It is the right decision for JLC to keep the piece unrestored and untouched Cheers, John

Yes, John, and the curator of the Heritage Gallery had sparks in the eyes when he showed

 By: amanico : June 23rd, 2015-14:11
Me the piece... Like us, Watch Lovers. That was great to see that! Best, Nicolas

Looking at it another way, it makes sense that the presentation watches to the submarine commanders would be in a precious metal (as is tradition) rather than stainless steel. Also, another new fact for me at least was that the special Geophysic caseback ...

And now history is preserved in this watch! So glad JLC is keeping this historical watch as it is. I also never knew the watch presented to the commanders were in yellow gold! Wow! Makes me rethink the red gold Tribute to Geophysic. Truth is I like it mor...
