SIHH 2010 The Memovox is Back!

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2010-10:40
Or should I say...Memovoxes, as not one but 2 have been presented during this SIHH: The " Simple " , the Master Memovox: The Memvox International: 1/ To get the importance of this watch, we need some historical background first. The Alarm has been THE Jae...

Happy to be the first one

 By: stromer : February 15th, 2010-11:28
to thank you for this great report, Nicolas! And what a great and tempting watch the Memvox has always been and is again. I am very keen to see it in the metal even if is not the time for me to think about buying watches at the moment (which fortunately h...

Come on, Martin...We only live once!

 By: amanico : February 16th, 2010-14:11
I may understand that your Banker has a slightly different opinion, but if we had to listen to him... Now, are you tempted to play the same game than me? One Vintage, one modern... Best, my friend, and thanks for your nice words. Nicolas

First things first

 By: stromer : February 16th, 2010-22:38
I told you in Paris about our plans; they are jumping into reality right now. So other beatiful things will have to wait a little. And even then there is another thing on top of my list which has been there for a long time and that I have postponed again ...

Excellent post Nicolas, congrats and thanks [nt]

strange Memovox caliber

 By: foullis : February 17th, 2010-01:34
I don't remeber which page, but I find a strange looking (early 50s) Memovox with a handwound caliber 601. Do you know something about this ? Milan

601 or 910?

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:07
I don't know any Cal 601 housed in a Memovox, my friend... Any pic? Best, nicolas

strange caliber

 By: foullis : February 17th, 2010-11:22
Here are the pictures Nicolas. Strange, but the 601 code was replaced for the word thinest quartz caliber in 1981-82 ! Cheers, Milan...

my 2 601s

 By: Clavi : February 18th, 2010-09:22
indeed, the 601 are somehow 'oddities' in the memovox timeline, and are very little known. Here are the 2 versions I am aware of: the most 'common' version (if we might say so...) : and the very rare other version:...

Wow, thanks ! Have case refs, Clavi ? [nt]

Thanks, Clavi.

 By: amanico : February 18th, 2010-11:46
You're the man of the situation! Didn't know this caliber in the Memovox History. Each day, we learn something. Thanks a lot. Best, Nicolas

Aaaaarrrrrrrgggggg ....

 By: bimbeano : February 15th, 2010-12:48
... this black dialed international in SS gives me nightmares ..... i need to rob a bank ... well, i suppose a grocery-store will do ??? As far as i'm concerned this one is thé 2010-hit by far ! Thanks for the report Nicolas !!! filip

One of the most interesting, I agree.

 By: amanico : February 16th, 2010-14:13
As it is part of JLC History, and that you won"t have to sell your house to get it... Thanks, my friend. Best, Nicolas

Thanks Nico for your post.

 By: foversta : February 15th, 2010-12:50
I was seduced by the simple one. I found it beautiful and a nice reinterpretation of this classic. I was less convinced by the International. I was a bit disappointed by the fact that the date window finally cut the inner circle. Fr.Xavier

+1, I like both the regular and the international..

 By: emcquillan : February 15th, 2010-13:29
editions, but was a little disappointed to see the date window on the international cut into the inner circle. I also thought the font at the top with "Jaeger-LeCoultre" was too crammed against the upper borders. Perhaps a 42 mm diameter would have solved...

I'm quite happy to see that JLC didn't release it in a larger case.

 By: amanico : February 16th, 2010-14:17
It is good to see the Tradition respected. It is also difficult to touch to a Myth. So, my opinion here is that JLC made the right choice. As for the window date on the Memo International, it is a Proto, and we'll see what JLC will do or not. Thanks for y...

I just saw a press photo from WatchTime last

 By: emcquillan : February 17th, 2010-05:04
night and both the date and the logo did not encroach on the inner circle. The porportions looked perfect so perhaps I spoke to soon.

That is.....

 By: MiniCooper : February 15th, 2010-13:31
a good point.... Cheers

I agree, X

 By: BDLJ : February 15th, 2010-18:31
Rather messy. And why did it have to grow to 40mm? I love the vintage and I love world timers, but surely they're the most useless complication/indication around.

Well the former Reveil was 38, 5 mm

 By: amanico : February 16th, 2010-14:18
The proportions on this new one are even more harmonious, which is an excellent point, IMO. Best, Ben! Nicolas

It was even worst on the first Proto.

 By: amanico : February 16th, 2010-14:14
But it is still a Proto, and we'll see what JLC will do, or not... Best, Nicolas

Both beautiful watches.

 By: nwp627 : February 15th, 2010-13:29
Thank you Nicolas for this presentation. On such an elegant watch I much prefer the plain dial of the "simple" Memovox. The "WT" is nice but it is my opinion that the inner dial is much to cluttered. However I still can't decide between the ss and the rg!...

There will be for everyone's taste, with these 2 Memos

 By: amanico : February 16th, 2010-14:19
Unless some Greedy Guys can't decide, and opt for both! Thanks, Neil! Best, Nicolas

What a great post.....

 By: MiniCooper : February 15th, 2010-13:29
of a great watch... actually two pairs of great watches..... And the desk accessory is an excellent idea.... thanks.... cheers

another delicious report

 By: ChristianDK : February 15th, 2010-15:03
of a very tasty watch. I cant wait to see it IRL. I have been waiting for this to happen for some time. The International I like it in all versions. I love the new crowns and the case. The dial is stunninng. However if I could thange just one tiny thing, ...

Well, COD

 By: amanico : February 16th, 2010-14:33
If you remove the lume on the hands ( which will not be a big deal as it is too thin to be useful in full darkness ) and the dots, too, some would say that it is not a good thing. As always, a consensus is impossible to find. BUT, personaly, I agree with ...

As the International has a black dial,

 By: amanico : February 16th, 2010-14:21
I think I will go on it... But if I wasn't that sold to the black dials, I would have serious issues to choose one of them. Both??? Damn, PP, youre so greedy! Best, my friend. Nicolas

Nicolas, your work here as moderator

 By: Mostel : February 15th, 2010-18:12
is absolutely sensational. Bravo!!!! Thank you.

Nice to see the Memovox make its return

 By: respo : February 15th, 2010-19:18
What a great report and history lesson, Nicolas. Thank you! Both watches are beautiful. I for one do not mind the date window cutting into the inner circle on the International. What does disturb me a little is the way the international time function work...

Interesting question, Respo

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:22
My guess is that JLC wanted to pay an hommage to their first Memovox World Time. So, the weight of History was more important than Innovation on this watch, but it doesn't really matter to me, as it is always nice to see some nices pieces ressurging from ...

Thanks for the history, Nicolas.

 By: CaliforniaJed : February 15th, 2010-22:38
I had a chance to see both the Master Memovox and Memovox International at the boutique, both in steel, and I found both quite nice. I prefer the simpler dial of the Master Memovox, and because I am a slave to my job and family, my opportunities to use th...

Be careful with the comparison, Jed...

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:27
As the Amvox I and the new Memo don't share the same Caliber, and that also makes a difference. So you should better compare the sound of a Navy Seals Alarm ( in titanium ) and the new Memo, in SS. So, you will appreciate the difference. As for the Intern...

Great Review Nicolas, maybe interesting to add

Thanks for your input, Patrickh

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:29
This is far from being an exhaustive review, as a book will be necessary to do so! But the most important is that the Story, or better said, History goes on! Best, my friend. Nicolas

SS is my choice

 By: grigo : February 16th, 2010-00:59
A really lovely report, was wondering when you would post one on the new Mevovox's and can't say that I am disappointed. My heart is set on the SS Memovox International and I already ordered it from my AD. I figured that it would be an instantaneous hit. ...

Well, Grigo, there were so many watches to speak about, this year.

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:34
And this post required more work than others, so you have the answer to your question. It will be discussed more and more with Time, BUT it has already been discussed a lot when I made the post on the new Memo, in December 2009. So, the novelty was not an...

Classic Memo for me

 By: moc : February 16th, 2010-02:42
I had the chance to see the international in London but I think the classic Memovox Reveil has a very elegant timeless appeal. It could be a perfect everyday wear.Always understated and classy.Maybe SS for me.Mo

You can't go wrong with these Memos, my friend.

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:36
International or " simple " they have both their charm and appeal. It will be funny to organize a Memo Roll Call! Best, Nicolas

RG one for me.

 By: Davo : February 16th, 2010-03:09
That's one sexy looking watch!

Excellent post on a great classic

 By: nitediver : February 16th, 2010-05:49
Thanks Nicoals, this is another excellent post - i very much like and appreciate your part about the history of the Momovox and of course the coverage of the new models. Pesonally, i would go for the simple dial version either in SS or RG. More classic fr...

Agree on the difference of price tag between the Normal and the International

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:38
I totally share your view on this point. The price of Nostalgia? Best, Nicolas

Great work N!

 By: matrix : February 16th, 2010-09:13
Your reviews are only getting better! But how? They've always been amazing with little room for improvement. Thanks again for the education my friend. I will have to say that the MI is my fav. but like you, I cant decide SS or RG!? I would lean more towar...

Thanks, Matrix, but when the watch is nice

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:40
It is easier to make a nice post... Best, my friend. Nicolas

Outstanding post

 By: nilomis : February 16th, 2010-10:46
Nicolas, Thank you very much for this world class post. A quick question: You mentioned that a very large number of Memovox were made. This makes this model less collectible, because is not rare? Cheers, Nilo

True that a large number of Memo were made

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:45
BUT a lot of different models were made, too. So, if you divide them by the number of watches released, in some case, you will notice that scarcity is real. On another note, scarce or not, the Memo is and will remain the Memo, a nice, Class and timeless w...

Thanks Nicolas ...

 By:   : February 16th, 2010-12:07
for this great report. This is a watch I was hoping for and I have already called my AD in december, after your initial post. Although "salivating" thanks to your pics, I do't mind the wait (again) ... I know I will be satisfied. Thanks Nico, saludos from...

Thanks for the nice words, Tony.

Stunning Nico....

 By: Andy : February 17th, 2010-06:06
Both beautiful but I find the International dial a bit 'busy' but love the deep black....if the regular Memovox had the black dial that would be worth a serious look. In fact I wouldn't be surprised one day by a boutique black edition so I'll just have to...

Aaah, Andy...

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-13:54
Who knows? Maybe one day, the Memo will come with a black dial... Actually, if you remember it well, the Master Reveil never came with such a black dial. So, I don't know. More sober or busier dial? The dial of the " International " is indeed busier, and ...

You know...

Nico, a question for you?

 By: FanFrancisco : February 17th, 2010-08:15
hi Nico, after reading your post on these very nice memovox, i went to search more info and tried to learn more on this line of models. And I found there was another model named "Memodate" which was not mentioned in your post. you excluded Memodate from y...

Naah, Stefan

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-08:18
The Memodate is a Memvox... Some markets sometime gave other names to the Memovox: Wrist Alarm, Memodate are among them. Best, Nicolas

great. many thanks, Nico.

 By: FanFrancisco : February 17th, 2010-08:26

I'll bet you go for the SS Nico

 By: Starman : February 17th, 2010-12:36
But I mentioned in an earlier post that Rose Gold goes quite well with JLC. Still SS with a black dial has all the right looks for me. I think it's a smart move of JLC to reincarnate the good old Memovox but man I'm sure you agree with me on this one; it ...

Everybody wanted it, JLC did it.

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-13:59
That's a good point. Which is even better is that now, we have the choice between the clean sober Memo, and the International... So everybody will be albe to choose his favourite without risk to go worng... As for the Master Chrono, I got the message, my ...

Both are very nice and I love the SS with black dial more

I was at the JLC SIHH 2010 preview party in Singapore a couple of weeks ago and handled the Master Memovox International, besides the Duometre a Quantieme Lunaire and Exteme Lab 2 . It is superbly done and the quick-set date is a welcome enhancement. No s...

You're right, Goh..The " novelty effect " was more important for the other pieces.

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2010-22:04
For 2 reasons: 1/ When we see the new Memo, we have the feeling it is part of the family for a long time. 2/ I already posted pics of it in December. Still, it is a great news to see JLC releasing such a part of History. As for the bracelet, I asked to my...

Love your post.....

 By: JMan : February 19th, 2010-17:22
Nicolas: Your posts are a dream for a newbie!! Always informative. Thanks for doing the research. My choice will be for the simple Memovox in SS in a Black dial though. JLC has to release this.... J.

Maybe, maybe not

 By: amanico : February 19th, 2010-21:09
Thanks for the nice words, my friend. As for a black dial on the simple Memo, maybe we'll see it, maybe not. We saw it on the Master Memovox with the manual caliber ( Cal 914 ), but not on the Master Reveil... So, 50 % is a good probability! Best, Nicolas

Black Dial !

 By: papazulu : February 21st, 2010-04:14
I´d like to share one of mine with you, two tone dial, vintage, with just the right amount of patina to the dial! Enjoy (as I do) Regards jimmy...

Indeed, Jimmy.

 By: amanico : February 21st, 2010-06:41
The right amount of patina! Wow, your luminous indexes are in an awesome condition. What a superb dial. Feel free to post more pics of this Beauty, I'm already in love with this old lady. Best, Nicolas
