First, i will say that my view concerns just the Patek and JLC. I have never had the Lange. Journe or Parmigiani on my wrist or even seen in the flesh. So......5110 vs UTT?
The size of the two watches makes a difference to me. The Patek is much closer to my ideal size given my specific wrist. I also think that its size is a big compliment to its style. It is an elegant watch.....one with panache. The 37mm size suits this style. The UTT is, as you say, much more of a tool watch and so can cope more easily I think with the 42.5mm. However, the size and depth of the UTT makes it a much less comfortable wear for me, and on this score I prefer the 5110.
I think it is wrong to compare the two on aesthetics simply because it is comparing apples with pears. The Patek is panache....the UTT is more tool. I vote for 5110 on the panache rating, but the UTT on the tool rating! Having said that, i do think the dial on the 5110 in all of the metals can be breathtaking...a certain wow factor that I don't feel myself on the UTT. The 5110 just has something unusual and special.
In terms of complication, and again this is a personal issue, but the world time complication is more useful to me. I prefer, when travelling, to see in one shot, the respective time zones. I don't want to have to work it out by looking at the case back. So, again, for me...a personal view.....I prefer the 5110.
Which would i rather have IF I NEVER OWNED EITHER? This is an interesting question. I think I would be swayed to say the 5110. Would i trade a 5110 for a UTT? No. Would i add a UTT? Yes.
To my mind, i have answered my question on which I prefer.... the 5110. Do i still like the UTT a great deal and would i consider adding it? Yes.
My first idea was to compare the latest Duometre UTT with a travel watch I own in my collection, and which I love a lot, the Patek World Time, reference 5110P. Launched in year 2000, the Patek World Time ref 5110 has been a reference in this complication,...
It is interesting how you can force yourself to compare two beloved watches in such an objective manner. I am sure anyone who is considering both models will benefit immensely from your writing. You asked for thoughts and here are mine. I have no personal...
I can understand that a Travel Watch is not a priroirty for those among us who are not frequent travelers. On another side, are we fascinated by complications we only use? For example, how many of the Chronograph fans use this complication? As for your qu...
...your original writing so thoroughly and tried to scrutinize the details of these watches in my mind :D Will show this thread to a friend who is considering both the Patek Worldtime and the Duometre with moonphase. He is a frequent traveler and may be i...
Firstly, thanks for doing it as it is a theme I am looking at in some detail for 2014. Second, thanks for being so meticulous in your analysis and producing a review that will no doubt be extremely helpful to so many looking at these wonderful watches. I ...
This is undisputable, and I greatly agree with you, as you well know. But the Duometre UTT has to write its own history, to become an icon. No doubt it has some strong assets, for that purpose. All the best, my dear friend. Nicolas
And, your analytical side took over to contemplate how to reconcile that you NEEDED both! :) Your effort was meticulous and fair! So, is the deposit down? PS: I caught a glimpse that now you have also reconciled that you need the black dial Duometre Chron...
The problem is that I realized that I " needed " both Duometre, the Black Chrono, and the UTT. Funnily, because I have the Patek Competitors ( the 5070 and the 5110P ) Thanks for reading, Joe. It is up to me now, to ask you the same question: Are you in? ...
Again a very nice read - did this twice already and was thinking through your hypothetical examples, which was great, to follow the thoughts, your thoughts.. Also - for completeness sake and helpful as well, you balanced beauty vs function, and concept vs...
You have to be mad about this complication to go deeper in the theme... As for your question, yes, both the 5130 and the Duometre UTT, in the same version, in white gold, are approximatively in the same price range, the Patek being 4 K Euros less expensiv...
Another superb review of yours that I read with great interest, many thanx Nico! And as Ruckdee very well put it "an epic battle between 2 major forces". But even if the score is very tight (I accept the verdict of your fierce battle) I must say that, to ...
If we are talking about Charm, the 5110P is a clear winner. Not that the UUT lacks charm; but the 5110P is playing on another league. I will repeat it once again, but when I saw the first official press release, the UTT let me totally cold. I can also con...
HI Nicolas, This must have taken you quite a bit of time for this review. Much appreciated and great pics. Perfect for the holidays when some of us have the luxury of time to read. Many thanks :) The duometre movement has a warm mesmeric charm ...
Yes, the old Quantième Lunaire, which is often a daily wear for me. The foudroyante reminds me to keep meetings short - time is moving! :) It follows me to quite a few events too UTT - I must admit I didn't warm up to it at the beginning, partly as I do n...
Therefore, the Travel Time is important if you have friends, clients or partners all over the world, and that you want to contact at some time. I often use my travel watches for that purpose, by the way. And to tell you all, a Travel Time, Wrold Time or G...
... beside the worldtime but these are 2 stunning and gorgeons beauties I will take the time today to read your review conscientiously with a lot of greed and lust thank you
Surely you haven't made it any easier for us to pick a winner. The only solution, for lovers of such a complication ..... is to get both. :) I wouldn't discount the TZ either. An excellent & enjoyable read - many thanks for a superb effort! There shou...
A tad more difficult to write, but more interesting, at the end; to better appreciate a Watch. Yes, getting both is the solution. And even more, if you keep in mind the one which started all, the Rolex GMT Master. Best, my friend, and thanks for your kind...

The Duometre is an icon to become, I strongly believe that. I quite love your conclusion, my friend. They are so diffrent and so complementary! Best, Nicolas
The UTT is 'unique'like its name,so no its not a world time per se ,but a very clever tool to tell time somewhere else in the world(or your own time too..) Clever and sophisticated like a real Duometre should be. Great way to end this year…. By the way,th...
I travel up to 50% of the time in my job and a good travel watch is vital to me. I've considered the PP 5130 but found the dial too busy for me, and I can imagine dial legibility would be a problem for me during long haul flights when cabin light is dim. ...
happy new year guys, seeing pictures made by a "S" will be always a pleasure. knowing SOHNE could be a part of the 'state of art', using a "S" complete the way of life of a gentleman. Congrats Ian. Olivier
As explained to Nico, the photo was taken for me at a Lange/Leica event. It was of course taken with a Leica camera but to be honest, I was a bit disappointed with the result. I just think it's a bit too dark for my liking. Please enlighten me. Regards, i...
hello ian, so you had the chance to use one the greatest camera, the LEICA S. this is a famous professional one, wich provides DNG files, as well as RAW. these files have to be adjust in prostproduction with photoshop, lightroom or capture one for example...
Thanks but this shot was NOT taken by me. LOL. It was taken for me at a Lange/Leica event held in Singapore last year (May 2013). And I have no clue why it is a sublime shot because it looks a bit dark to my untrained eye. Regards, ian
But then again, this was a monster of a post which I only had the pleasure of re-reading today! I think that the UTT occupies a special place for the world traveller. I am reminded of that time when you posted a series on the Tribute Reversos from awhile ...
