Mechanics for mechanics sake

Sorry, but all the intellectual and innovative effort put in this device seems excessively overdone to me. But it has been a trend for quite a while now to make easy results (time-telling) with machines as complicated as possible. Being a functionalist and minimalist I find this utterly mannered.
