Hmmmm....2 out of my 6
Feb 06, 2014,09:33 AM
Fun post, that really got me thinking about my little collection. Fortunately, it's only 6 pieces, so didn't take that much time!
A few conclusions:
1. I am definitely a quality over quantity guy -- would much rather wait to get a great watch than buy several lesser ones
2. Having said that, I certainly like to have watches that are appropriate for the various situations my life puts me in
Bearing this in mind, I am actually extremely happy with 5 out of the 6 watches in my collection, all of which feel special to me, and play a unique role in my collection: Omega SMP Americas Cup (first nice watch, beater), Rolex Milgauss (jack-of-trades, weekend / casual watch), GO PML RG (gold / brown strap watch), JLC Reverso Bleu (black strap, formal / daily office watch), and AP Millenary 4101 SS (party watch).
The only one that feels redundant is my Cartier Roadster, which was an old purchase that I will probably get rid of sooner rather than later anyway, once my wallet recovers enough to add an AP 15305 or VC 1921.
It was tough narrowing that list of 5 down to 2 (ie, c.25% of 7)... tough to imagine life without any of them! But, if I must, I think I would go with the Rolex Milgauss and the AP 4101.
The Milgauss is perhaps the most versatile watch I own, and could get away with wearing it anywhere from a boardroom to a beach. And it's always fun to look down at my wrist and see the flash of green and orange. In fact, if I had to pick just the one, this one might be it, just because of the flexibility it would give me.
But since I can pick a second, I also get the pleasure of keeing my AP 4101 on my wrist. I've had this for over two years now, and it still gives me so much joy. I think this is a true piece of haute horology, but still at a price that is attainable by mere mortals. My shoddy photo does not even begin to do it justice. The finishing, the curves, the layers, juxtaposition of the classic and modern, the visible beating heart... all of it just magnificent, and not to mention a little dangerous -- makes me spend way too much staring at my wrist when I should be focusing on other things!
cheers,
Kartik.
PS -- I've got my Reverso Duo Bleu on my wrist as I type this, staring at my very accusingly...
