JLC Ref 1901, the Kingdom of the Flat.

Sep 02, 2013,21:57 PM

There is a category we don't often discuss during our vintage trips: Flat watches from JLC.

Which is quite surprising, as JLC had an interesting offer, in this domain.

Basically, The Grande Maison released, in the Sixties, different references, such as the 1901, 1903, 1913, 1918, 1925, 1947..., which came in two sizes of case: 32 and 34 mm, avalaible in 18 Kt Gold or in stainless steel.

Both of these references using the Cal 818.

Both being flat, with a reasonable height of approximatively 6 to 7 mm.

tow kind of lugs, though: Welded, like on the ref 1903 and 1947, or not, like on the 1925, as shown on this catalog from 1963, borrowed to Clavi.

That being said, let's now focus on the Ref 1901.

1/ The case:

This is a classic round one, with welded lugs, on which the case literally " seats ", as you can see here:

A very small signed crown, which makes the watch not very easy to wind, but at least coherent with the whole volume of the watch:

A quite uncommmon detail, on this watch, is the fact that the case is made of 18 Ct WHITE Gold, which is revealed by the writings inside the case back:

The Ref 1901, as all these " flat " references, has a snap back case, which has the particularity to be quite thick... And the extra tenth of millimeters:

2/ The movement:

The Cal 818 is born in 1959. It has a diameter of 20, 9 mm, a height of 2, 94 mm, beats at the pace of 18000 vibrations per hour, and is manual winding.

Pleasant to see, with its cotes de Genève, and its sensual bridges, it is typical from what we are used to see in the production of the Vallée de Joux.

Small, it seems quite lost in the case!

3/ The dial:

Minimalist, pure, clean are the words which immediately come to mind to describe this reference.

Applied hour markers each five minutes, with an exception, at 3 o' clock, here is located the Jaeger-Lecoultre signature, doubling the applied JL logo at 12 o' clock.

The thin and very discrete hours and minutes hands are in accordance with the dial, I find.

Conclusion:

No alarm, nor Chronograph, date, just elegance, discretion, a great watch for great events.

The case in white gold adds some density, which is very pleasant for the wrist.

Not as famous as the icons of the brand, but not less appealing!

Enjoy!

Your quote "Not as famous as the icons of the brand, but not less appealing" sounds strange however for beside the size I find this watch absolutely a gem of elegance and simplicity, magnificent, yes I agree the mouvement is a little lost in this space, b...

A pleasure to share some feelings on this watch, my friend.

Of course relatively small vs our today's standards but so pure and elegant! "The time, what else ?..." so as to paraphrase the famous coffee ad...! Thank you Nicolas for this beautiful review of a very classy dresswatch. Best, Mike

Size doesn't have to refrain from considering this watch.

It looks much bigger in the real, due to the volumes and the aperture of the dial. A jewel. Best, and thanks for your input, Mike. Nicolas

It would certainly not refrain me

Do not misunderstand me, I have a "chicken's" wrist so I am used to (and I like) small size watches. With 36mm diameter, my former PP 2526 also was not having a large case. And specially for an elegant white gold dress watch with large aperture like this ...

Simple yet beautiful

Nice one. Simple looking but with charm and the secret 'white gold' appeal

A nice and classic watch at first sight. But the true 'detail' which makes it very appealing from a collectors perspective is that it is white gold. In the 1960's, this was an extremely rare feature, and in the JLC line-up, none of the 'classic' icons lik...

Exactly, Clavi. This is THE detail which makes of this fine watch

So very glad to see the very rare white gold example. Mine is SS but loved all the same. This watch and its modern simplicity is more relevant today than many of its modern iterations. The logos at 12:00 and 3:00 have a double function as markers to work ...

" It isn't a Patek, it is a JLC and it defines what it wants to be on its own terms and

Merits " Guille, my friend.... Bravo. Your words are perfectly chosen, superbly put. As well as your version, which I had the pleasure to see in the flesh, a few months ago. All the very best, my dear friend. Nicolas

classic of the classics!

... ultra thin watch has been the flagship model in JLC watches, can't agree more that this is the Kingdom of the Flat. with in WG which adds additional charm on it. good reminder, it is time to wear my MUT!!! stefan

Well, in this case, this is not an ultra thin watch, but a flat one.

BUT put it on your wrist, and you will immediately be seduced by its class and elegance... Best, my friend, and thanks for your input. Nicolas

I've got one that has the dial of the Ref 1903, with the case similar to the Ref 1913 with the ultra small crown but with lugs without access holes similar to the Ref 1901. I wear it daily, I originally bought it used for $50 in Jamaica as a gift for my f...
