SIHH 2012: Another journey in time: The Master Ultra Thin RDM.

Feb 13, 2012,13:13 PM

The Master Reserve De Marche had a long life, and some feared that it would disappear, soon.

The bad news is that it is now discontinued.

The good news is that JLC decided to bring it back to life, modernized.

Don't be too afraid, its character is preserved. You will not be disappointed with the dial, which looks the same, with its delicious assymetry.

Here, the case changes, with the base of the minute and hour hands, which are still Dauphine, the applied 12 on the dial, which is replaced by an applied marker, the slimmer bezel, and a flatter crown.

The only small reserve I would have is about the blue hands, which are painted, not heated.

The main change is about the case, which is borrowed from the Master Grande Ultra Thin case, in 39 mm.

So, compared to the previous version, it gains 2 mm, but most important, a very nice profile, which is the main asset of the MGUT case.

The case is 9, 85 mm thick, which is still very reasonnable.

Let's see some more pictures, now:

It is available in stainless steel and in rose gold, for the moment.

I'm waiting to see some developments, such as a platinum iteration with a blue dial or a stainless steel with a black dial.

That would really be awesome.

But, as it is, it looks very appealing.

Another dign heir of a vintage watch, the JLC Powermatic:

The newer Reserve De Marche:

Some pictures of the rose gold version, which has an egg shell dial ( silver dial for the stainless steel RDM )

The 2 versions, side by side:

I am a big fan of this case, so I may be a bit biased in my appreciation on this watch.

A word on the movement, which is the Cal 938, a 41 jewels automatic movement, beating at 28 800 vibrations per hour, 4, 90 mm high, and offering a power reserve of 43 hours.

What about you, especially the RDM lovers?

Best,

Nicolas. This message has been edited by amanico on 2012-02-13 13:19:11 This message has been edited by amanico on 2012-02-15 14:09:43

Pleasent, if a bit boring

 By: aaronm : February 13th, 2012-13:38
frankly that could go for the watch as well as the update. I am glad they didn't mess with the design, trying to rejigger it in the style of the new Geographic or the other complex Masters would have been a disaster! For a watch where simplicity is the ov...

Look at the last picture, with the 2 dials...

 By: amanico : February 13th, 2012-13:44
It is a trick of light, Aaron. I would more generally say that playing with such a popular watch is always a risky game, and that here, JLC played it smart. Perfect? Certainly not. I am rather disappointed by the painted blue hands, when they should be he...

It's still on the last pic!

 By: aaronm : February 13th, 2012-14:03
look at the date ring on the steel case, there's a "not right" ring with all the printing and extending a bit beyond. Same sort of coloring i was seeing around the RdM a

I warned you about going to Dr. Moe

What to say? Happy to have them back.

I'm sure for some people it was a sad day when they were discontinued, so now RDM lovers can smile again. Maybe someday our JLC friends will decide to bring us back the gorgeous manual winding Master Memovox with it's sapphire caseback. This case looks gr...

I said it several times, but this case is really top.

 By: amanico : February 13th, 2012-13:54
I do hope that JLC will use it more often. As for the Memo with a manual movement, yes, it is a dream I share with you. Best, Vicente, and thanks for answering. Nicolas.

Well done

Well done by the team of JLC. It looks like a classic beauty. The case is really nice and I am happy that JLC resisted the temptation to mess with the dial layout Best, Stefan

Thanks for your input.

A nice watch... but...

 By: foversta : February 13th, 2012-14:11
This watch is very nice especially in PG (I have trouble to consider the SS version when I see the PG one with its ivory dial) but it really lacks the touch of spice to be a masterpiece. Actually, it is a very formated timepiece designed to be successful ...

Tend to agree with you. But the game was too risky, I think.

 By: amanico : February 13th, 2012-14:15
And, at the contrary of you, I prefer the icy SS... Best, Nicolas

I really like the new case/bezel

Nicolas, haven’t been around to comment on all your post about the news from SIHH… But I would like to send you a big thank you, excellent posts! Thank you for all your hard work! As for the new RDM – at the first look it seems to be the same… But in deta...

I still have a favourite, when it comes to the Master RDM.

 By: amanico : February 13th, 2012-14:18
The Black dialed one! Wow, this one is still stuck in my memory. As for the Powermatic, yes, it is a great watch, with its big ad thick ( relatively, of course ) 37 mm case. Best, my friend. Nicolas.

this is not the spirit of the RDM

 By: OlivierT : February 13th, 2012-22:34
morning nicolas, back for a moment. well, little bit disappointed; this one was one of my favorite, I have owned one in the past. but this one? sorry no. what could we say about indexes, numbers were so great... and the size? so difficult to understand th...

That is why I wanted to get the owners opinion...

 By: amanico : February 13th, 2012-23:09
This is one thing to look at a watch, this is another thing to live with it. Hence your opinion is useful. I would only disagree with you when you say that the JLC design is difficult to understand this year. I found it rather mature, which doesn't mean t...

Sharing perception

dear nicolas, dear friend, it was a little bit difficult this year to spend time for the SIHH, I canceled my journey at the last moment, because of meetings on paris for business... however, I realy prefer the work made on reverso's models. hope the size ...

Maybe because it is more a MUT RDM than a " simple " RDM?

 By: amanico : February 14th, 2012-07:33
I totally hear you on the new size of the Duometre... Some with smaller wrists will appreciate, others will stay with the classic 42 mm. Though, I can't say that the new Duometre à QL, 40, 5 mm is an ugly watch. What is more problematic, in my opinion, is...

Yesss

 By: OlivierT : February 14th, 2012-09:05
well my friend, you have exactly targeted your expertise on the huge problem! the same model proposed with different sizes. that's why I've said I'm a little bit disappointed by the way of JLC design now. ;-)

Pretty late .. Can really relate to that.. :)

Black must have been awesome, I trust. - The case & bezel of the new RDM I like a lot, also the asymmetry, exhibiting difference. - I hear and learn the issue of "heated vs painted" and concur completely. But as I am without clear memory or knowledge as t...

I feel sad Nicolas...

Because I proudly thought I mastered at least one single knowledge when it comes to JLC: if a blue hand is heated or painted. After many discussions, observations and search of opinions over the years I reached the conclusion that the JLC blues hands coul...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Marcelo.

 By: amanico : February 14th, 2012-07:37
I regret the heated blue hands were changed for vulgar painted ones... I totally agree with you on this point. As for the other points, i think an owner's opinion is more " worthy " than those who never got a Master RDM. Though, I am pretty happy to see J...

Painted vs Blued hands

 By: HW : November 3rd, 2012-19:22
Nicolas, I am interested in purchasing thos watch and am wondering whether JLC now blues the hands or are they still painted? Based on Marcelo's post, the hands on the RDM are blued but apparently not. Is there a way to determine whether the hands in the ...

Noted and thanks for the feedback!

Well, I must say...

 By: watchme : February 14th, 2012-10:48
I DO love it. However, I would really like to have seen a moonphase at 6 o'clock. I really like the 3 complications together: reserve de marche, date, moonphase. And it would've been a great contender against the PP 5712 and similar iterations. -Dean

This is something I didn't think about...

 By: amanico : February 14th, 2012-11:32
A contender of the Nautilus 5712... With the small seconds inside the moonphase, I guess? And a black dial? Hmmmm... I start to be seduced. Best, Dean. Nicolas

Great looking watch

 By: Mostel : February 14th, 2012-11:03
I am disappointed that the hands are painted, not heated. Sigh... Can this really save so much money and time? maybe it does. I never want to be aware of 'bean counters' on luxury items. Oh well, I still find the watches very cool and uniquely JLC. Silly ...

This is the kind of detail ( heated blue hands ) which JLC should take care of.

 By: amanico : February 14th, 2012-11:28
I do hope that they correct that flaw inb the definitive watch... To me also, it is its major flaw. Best, and thanks for your input, Mostel. Nicolas

Thank you for the intro and review..

of the new RDM... I like the updated case size and the thinner profile as I travel futher down my watch collecting path, I have found that I wear my thinner pieces more often. I have always found the assymetry intriguing. Any insights to its past? The RG ...

The ancester of the RDM is the Powermatic, Phil.

 By: amanico : February 14th, 2012-11:23
Even if, at a certain moment, JLC linked it to the Futurematic... To be seen in the flesh, indeed. Best, Nicolas

I like the former model, Hermano.

 By: renerod : February 14th, 2012-11:48
And I like the new one about the same. JLC has mede a good work keeping the design of the watch with a continuum. Good that they didn't fiddle with it too much. Details less, details more, they are both very classic watches, gentleman watches. Does the SS...

Circular finish on the two round subdials, my friend.

 By: amanico : February 14th, 2012-11:56
You have a point, here... Although the new one has a different case and a slightly different dial, the spirit is still here, I think. Still very JLC... If only they kept the heated blue hands of the former model.... Best, Nicolas

It has all the qualities I can agree to. Even the size should be found agreeable by most.

 By: Ruckdee : February 17th, 2012-02:19
Like you, I am also a big fan of this case. I think it has to do with how the lugs flow. Sweet! Ruckdee

Better or Worst...

 By: gup502 : April 4th, 2012-18:37
Thanks very much for sharing this newer version of RDM. Being an owner of a rose gold RDM, I have a few observations and inputs to share. The previous RDM has a smaller marker at 10 in order to make room for the power reserve gauge. There is no marker at ...

Thanks for your detailed input, gup 502.

Better or worse, it is indeed very subjective. Best, Nicolas

Date change mechanism

 By: HW : November 20th, 2012-08:50
Quick question - Does the date change gradually between eg. 11.30pm - 2pm? Or does it change via a quick jump sometime around 12am? Or does it just gradually move throughout the whole day? Thanks!

If I remember well, it jumps.
