JLC SIHH 2011: The Master Grande Ultra Thin Moon 39: Back to the Essential.

Feb 14, 2011,00:06 AM

Ok, guys, I surrender, and won't hide this novelty anymore.

Here is a very interesting watch, from JLC: The Master Ultra Thin Moon.

Why is it so interesting?

Mainly because of its undisputable elegance.

Here you have a thin ( rather than an ultra thin ) watch, with a superb case, and a classic, not to say timeless, dial.

To say it better, you have a coherent watch, with no weak points.

1/ The dial:

All the key codes of a timeless piece are here:

Sunburst finish, long thin triangular indexes, rodhium plated for the SS version, or gilt for the Rose Gold version, long and slim dauphine hands, matching with the hour markers, and the traditional heated blue second hand.

A circular date, all around the moonphase, much nicer, in my opinion, than the traditional date window at 3 or 4, which would have ruined such a pure dial.

Simple, sober, understated and elegant. Nothing more to add.

2/ The case:

If you're in love with the dial, you will fall for the case.

Let's say it straight, this is not what I'd call an ultra thin, but a thin and GORGEOUS case.

The case is 39 mm big, and 9, 9 mm high, which is not a bad outcome for an automatic movement with a moonphase and a date.

But, and you got it, most importantly is the fact that this case is to die for: Slim, very nice proportions, and sublime lugs, some details shared with the Master Ultra Thin 38 and even more with the Grande Master Ultra Thin ( this last one having a 40 mm case ).

For those who are found of a warmer contrast and a more " retro look ", the Rose Gold version is THE choice.

Otherwise, the very elegant stainless steel is the one to go for.

3/ Movement and case back:

The movement ( Cal 925 ) is a new 246 parts, 30 jewels, automatic calibre, beating at 28 800 vibrations per hour, and offering an autonomy of 43 hours, which is relatively thin ( 4, 90 mm ) for an automatic movement.

Its aesthetic is very familiar to all JLC fan, as you can see on the picture below, and can be seen through the sapphire case back:

As to conclude ith this watch, I'd say that I appreciate it so much that I would love to see a manual movement inside, to gain even more in thinness.

But, as it is, no doubt that it will be a hit.

In fact, it is already a hit!

A last detail I love a lot, but it is more about the whole JLC collection of this year, is that our beloved brand seels to favorize smaller size for elegant watches, and to reserve bigger sizes for other watches.

This MUT Moon 39 is a perfect example: They could adopt the case of the Grande MUT, but they decided to make it smaller ( 1 mm ).

Brilliant.

It seems that JLC is starting to re think the case of their watches, too.

Promising!

Best,

Nicolas. This message has been edited by amanico on 2011-02-14 00:17:52 This message has been edited by amanico on 2011-02-18 22:58:21

Fantastic and VERY PRACTICAL!

I am very happy the JLC is moving towards elegant watches and this is, indeed! I love the moon phase and for me it has a lot of meanings making this watch a most practical one for every day use: I could either let the moon phase follow the actual moon - t...

To quote you ... "no weak points"

 By: Ruckdee : February 14th, 2011-01:28
I think that sums it up pretty well for me. And in my humble opinion, there is absolutely nothing to improve in this (slightly complicated) simple and elegant timepiece. Whether or not it fits me remain to be seen in the flesh. But looking at the pictures...

When you see it in the flesh, you will have to pay attention to the case ...

Especially. It is superbly conceived. Keep us updated, please! Best, Nicolas.

I share your enthusiasm, Jerome. [nt]

You said it, already - "..no weak points" - great size, as well ! I even would be inclined to say " Only strong points" ( well - maybe the Month and the Day ? - but then it's more a Master Calendar..) - and I would expect, this one ( SS) reasonable for th...

Interesting thoughts, hs

The day and the month? It would indeed ba a Master Calendar, a watch which still exists in the catalog. No, I think that the focus on the moonphase and the circular date is excellent, here. If after JLC wants to revisit its Master Calendar, I may have a "...

A short answer won't do justice to this beauty, hs.

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2011-13:32
It is, IMO, a very interesting watch, one of the finest ever made, which is very colse to the VC Sister. Will try to prepare something about it. Best, Nicolas.

Wow

Nicolas, thanks for showing us this. This one makes my heart jump the same way it did when I laid eyes on the MUT34 for the first time. Other financial commitments mean this will remain a dream for the time being, but hey, it's good to have an aspiration,...

Thanks for your input, Jat.

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2011-02:52
I'm pretty sure that your dream will come true, one day. You know, it is just a matter of time, after all. I'm really happy to see that this kind of watch is more and more present in the JLC catalog, too. Best, and thanks for your input. Nicolas.

The beauty, the elegance of the case. You guess the sensual lugs, and the thin case. As sensual as elegant. A good one, from " La Grande Maison ". Best, Nicolas.

Well, E.S, I already have 3 2011 JLC watches in my list.

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2011-08:00
So I will need to pass on this one. The ones I will get are the 2 Tribute To Deep Sea Alarm, + the Tribute To 1931. I also need to complete my Vintage JLC collection, too, so I will have to refrain a bit... Best, Nicolas.

Awesome beautiful watch!

Even better than 40mm, Andreas... 39 mm!

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2011-08:02
And what do you think about the Reveros U.T? Not bulky at all, my friend. No, the problem is that there are too many tempting choices, this year... Best, Nicolas.

You are right, Nicolas: each mm counts!

 By: anaesdoc : February 15th, 2011-08:16
Hi Nicolas, any piece with a small diameter or height is welcomed by me! Kind regards, anaesdoc

And this is not the only piece to have reduced volumes...

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2011-08:20
I will introduce, quite shortly, the new Master Géographique, which is also 39 mm big, in a Master Control case. Another very nice surprise, this year. Best, Nicolas.

Availability to be determined, but I think it is programmed for July. I may be wrong... I will have to get a confirmation on this, and on its price, too. Will of course keep you updated ( nothing before mid March, though ). Best, Nicolas.

... it is good to see MJLC to proactively lead the trend of not-so-big case of watch... this is a very smart move especially when the market goes back to appreciate classic and elegant watch which does not require big casing! another i also agree with you...

These are questions I asked to JLC during this SIHH.

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2011-11:40
Do we have to see the return of the thin and smaller case as a tendance? Yes for dressy watch, no for sporty watches. So both will co exist, which, I think, is a good thing, as it will cover everybody's taste. About manual movements, I hope JLC will devel...

actaully...

 By: FanFrancisco : February 19th, 2011-09:23
... sporty watches are not necessary to be in larger case. few weeks ago at one local GTG, one participant brought along his VC chrono with 2 registers only... it looks excellent size... in fact we all realized that it requires top skill and craftsmanship...

The 37 mm or the 42 mm case?

 By: amanico : February 19th, 2011-09:25
The Les Historiques or the Malte Chrono? Both are more drsssy and sporty, IMO. Best, Nicolas.

it was 37mm....

 By: FanFrancisco : February 19th, 2011-09:28
... but i forgot to ask what was the model. stefan

The " Les Historiques ", with the teardrop lugs.

 By: amanico : February 19th, 2011-09:30
Much dressier than sporty, don't you think? In this case, I think the smaller is the better. I even prefer it to the Malte Chrono with its 42 mm case, which I love a lot, by the way, but I prefer the " Les Historiques ". Best, Nicolas.

the UT line has gotten my interest..

numbers on the dial

 By: tee530 : February 14th, 2011-13:28
Ken, I was thinking the same thing. While the dial design is a work of art, it is also possible to view it as a bit empty. Picture JLC's classic "9-12-3" applied numbers on the dial, or even just the "12" to balance the weight of the 6 o'clock subdial. Ni...

I don't know, my friend. A 12 insteand of the triangular indexes at 12? Why not. But certainly not a 12 / 3 / 9 configuration, as the dial shows a brilliant sobriety, to me, according to my personal taste. In France, we use to say that we are 60 000 000 N...

in things that matter... like case size! And the design aesthetic leaves no room for argument. Having the traditional triple date master moon/master calendar windoww would have polarized its fans... no the windows are too near each other... no the windows...

That is a complementary watch to the Master Moon ( Triple date moonphase )

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2011-14:07

I would add this model to the very short list of classic design watches that quiet the mind... bliss! I can of course imagine the perpetual chronograph in the future! THAT one would be almost impossible to resist, if it stayed as pure as this.

A perpetual Chrono in the Duometre Line or Master Grande Tradition...

Not a bad choice at all, Richard.

The GP is a superb watch, my friend. You cal always consider one of the other JLC novelties, this year, which would be much different from your G.P. The embarass of the choice? Best, Nicolas.

I see what you mean about the central second.

 By: amanico : February 17th, 2011-08:20
Without, it would have been evenr " calmer ". Maybe too calm? But I don't think it ruins the purity of the dial, though. Best, and thanks for your input. Nicolas.

Good observation. I didn't notice the second was there until now.
