An old Watch Catalogue from the 50thies

Jul 25, 2010,09:39 AM

Hello everybody!

Some time ago I posted some old JLC catalogues.

Promised to try to scan better images, but have not found a scanner…

So you will have to settle for regular photos, sorry.

I can’t find any printing on which year, but from the watches inside the catalogue it looks like it’s from the early/mid 50thies.

Did you see what was missing?!

The Reverso! Not a single one!

Best,

Blomman

A lot of infromations, here. The Page 18 made me dream , as I am hunting this Ref 258, the clock with the sky chart. Another interesting example is the Ref E 851, which apperas with a different dial, if you compare with mine. I badly miss some of these ol...

Too funny, Nicolas!

As I went through the pages of the catalogtue, I stopped at page 18 and drooled! Love that Sky Chart clock. i hope you find one soon if onky so I can see sokme great new photos of it and learn more about it. respo

Well, the even most funny thing is that I saw one in real, very recently.

And that I fell in love with. The problem is that the one I saw wasn't for sale... But I'm pretty sure I will find one, it is just a matter of time. Best, my friend. Nicolas

Yes indeed! :)

Like a window to the past! The problem is that you “discover” a lot of watches you haven’t seen before or not really given any attention when you saw them… I got these some time ago and after that I was “forced” to get one in the catalogue… One I have bee...

Let me guess...

Hard to miss...

More to come…! Best Blomman

It is so nice to see one of these catalogues

 By: respo : July 26th, 2010-07:18
Thanks for posting this, Blomman. What surprises me is that JLC provided even less information about each watch back than than they do now. LOL. I always am disappointed by the lack of information published by the various manufactures either on line or in...

We all want to know more…

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 26th, 2010-08:04
Yes, indeed the Manufactures often are very “stingy” when it comes to information… But maybe that’s a part of the mystic that keeps us coming back?! Best Blomman

Well, contrary to popular belief...

 By: watchme : July 26th, 2010-07:30
and some marketing, the Reverso was retired by JLC, but was built for (or allowed to be built by, depending on the company) Patek (1932), Cartier, Hamilton, Buren, and a couple of others. In 1939, with WWII and Swiss watch exports restricted, enthusiasm f...

Thanks for this perfect summary on the Reverso History, Dean.

 By: amanico : July 26th, 2010-07:37
Yes, we have some difficulties to imagine that the Reverso has been stopped for over 15 years! But, as you described it perfectly, the context was not the same than today, and if you had the Quartz era, mechanical watches, and specially the Reversos, look...

Yes, the Italians are responsible for directing...

 By: watchme : July 26th, 2010-08:30
or, at least, "exciting" watch trends and shirt trends. Hence, the questions most often asked by Italian designers of custom shirts are: what type of cuff? and what type of watches do you wear (and what diameter and profile)? -Dean

Interesting point...

 By: amanico : July 26th, 2010-08:34
Italians weren't " stuck " on only one size... They did a lot for Rolex Watches ( 38 / 40 mm ), Reversos ( much smaller ), and at the other extrem, for big watches, when they paid homage to THEIR watches, I mean the Panerais ( 44 mm ) at a moment where mo...

Wow, very informative, Dean!

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 26th, 2010-08:08
Thank you, Dean! That’s why there are no Reverso’s in the catalogue! It’s hard to imagine that the no 1 JLC icon was extinct for so many years. Thank you for sharing this info! Best Blomman

fascinating catalogue...

 By: FanFrancisco : July 26th, 2010-08:13
... Blomman, it is very nice of you to scan and show this catalogue to us. in fact this catalogue is very useful and helpful for me. sometimes i come across some watches, but not sure whether the watch is a correct one if without proper reference like thi...

Yes, Stefan…

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 26th, 2010-11:00
The only way to have a chance is to see documents like this. I am hunting then as bad as the watches. But they are hard to find… Thank you, Stefan – more to come! Best Blomman

I may be able to help...

 By: gatorcpa : July 26th, 2010-14:26
... as I noticed one of my watches in this picture: In the upper right is an example of E165. I have one of these: I wrote to JLC and they said my watch was made in 1955, so mid-1950's is correct. Take care, gatorcpa...

Thank you, Gatorcpa!

Very helpful! Thank you and congrats to your great watch! Best Blomman

Sad JLC

 By: AndrewD : July 26th, 2010-20:33
It's interesting to see that the time set on all the clocks and watches is 3:42 and not the more typical 10:10. I wonder if the 10:10 trend came laterm, as evidenced in your Rolex and Omega adverts from the subsequent decades. Really enjoyable post. Thank...

LOL, eagle eye, Andrew...

 By: amanico : July 26th, 2010-22:04
You did well to notice that... You made me check something I will share later with all of you, but in the same document, I saw a pîc of a Geophysic with the hands at 3.42, and another pic of the same watch with the ( traditional for us ) 10.10. You I'm no...

Remember Marv's JLC adverts?

 By: AndrewD : July 26th, 2010-22:23
Hi Nico, Remember Marv's JLC adverts ? Most show 10:10, although there is a bit more variability in the early adverts, particularly the clocks. It may have depended on the whim of the photographer/graphic designer, but it is certainly rare to see anything...

If I remember this post, Andrew?

 By: amanico : July 26th, 2010-22:28
I even had dinner with its author, yesterday! Yes, of course, these are documents I save in my HD for my future posts. Yes, there is no special rule, here, I guess. Best, Nicolas

That’s a great post! :)

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 27th, 2010-04:18
Thanks, Andrew for making me aware of that one! Best Blomman

I wondered about that too…

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 27th, 2010-00:54
Hi Andrew, I also wondered about the sad faces. Maybe they thought it would be interpreted as an arrow upwards? Instead as a sad face… Best Blomman...

3:42 was to fully expose the manufacturer...

 By: watchme : July 27th, 2010-10:03
or, rather, to not hide any info on the brand and watch model. -Dean

Again, thank you, Dean! :)

By: blomman Mr Blue : July 27th, 2010-12:36
Good point! Like fashion – the way we think and interpret things over the years changes…! Best Blomman

I never noticed that before...

 By: gatorcpa : July 27th, 2010-06:49
... even my watch was set at 3:42 for the photo taken by the seller. Very interesting, gatorcpa

Great material, thanks for sharing [nt]
