Request granted, Nicolas - The adventure into the Deep One

Mar 11, 2008,12:38 PM

Hi all,

With all due respect to new and stunning JLC Master Diving Pro Geographic - but this is the pioneer.

This was my first contact with JLC as a brand, even though its an IWC Deep One. The exclusively made JLC caliber with a mechanical depth gauge for IWC is what impressed me with JLC as a manufacture.

Even though, there are debates about whether this should be called 'Deep One' or not due to the fact that its only 300m water resistant, comparing to its brother the Aquatimer with a water resistance up to 1000m. But can the Aquatimer measure depth? hah!

And below are some scans of my new sin to JLC.... the IWC Portugese 7 Days..... BTW. Nicolas your Panda Portugese 7 Days is very slick indeed!

Enjoy

Can you explain what is going on with the pump device and the Deep On. At least waht is the pupose of the pump. I love the IWC Portugese 7 Days. Sweet Ride. Thanks Bill

The pump is to reset the Depht meter, Bill

Pana thanks a lot for these pics...It gives me always an emotion when I see it. As mine, yours is complete! I totally agree on what you said, this watch is a pioneer. A keeper, for sure, don't be as silly as I was to sell mine! Thanks for the Port 5000, i...

So I guess

 By: Bill : March 11th, 2008-14:21
This means you set it to zero. Go on your dive. The max depth is registered of the dive and when you get home you reset. Or You prepare the watch by pumping it and then when you dive it shows the variable depth. Still confused. Bill

So I guess you could say

This watch is a record keeper of the dive. Not really a diving tool to use as a reference during the dive in conjunction with other equipment. I have heard some of the other watches with this type of "complication - depth gauge" if one can call it that us...

Yes, for the Panerai

Not a problem at all....

Nicolas, it seems that we have quite a few similar pieces including the misses' pieces as well. Overall, the Deep One is definitely a keeper - horological importance and investment. The only issue I have is that it often gets mixed up with the ETA-based A...

LE of 1000 pieces for the Portuguese 5000

 By: amanico : March 11th, 2008-14:46
Not THAT hard to find, I even know 2 for sale at the moment I'm typing this message... But hey, a piece to go on it..The plexy gives it a very warm look, quite vintage! Yep, a keeper. Seems that effectively, we have some watches in common, pana...LOL Best...

The plexy just.......

 By: ppalasthira : March 11th, 2008-15:11
For me the plexy just give the watch, not only a sharp vintage look but also it shows more of the Portugese's heritage and roots. IMHO, the Portugese current collection should have a more 'vintage' feel like your 5000. The 5002 is a nice watch, please don...

Totally agree, Pana

Maybe we should have something interesting from IWC this year... Something in this spirit whixh IWC missed a bit, IMHO, this 3 or 4 past years... Let's see, and wait a bit, now. Best. Nicolas

Nicolas, I totally forgot to show you this.......

I used to collect watch dials, but sort of given up for no apparent reason. A bit banged up, but still a beauty. This was an old photo that I took. I don't really know what sort of shape it would be in now. Your Panda dial still rocks. I really don't know...

Great watch this deep one...

Thanks for sharing ppalasthira !!! Arhg the plexi...5000 VS 5001 Remember Nicolas... On my wrist today...PANDA !!!...

Nicolas, i've got a question for you....

 By: ppalasthira : March 11th, 2008-18:09
I assume that you are registered with the IWC Official Members website. I haven't been on there for quite a while, mostly hanging around 'Le Club'.... A colleaque of mine told me that if you own an important piece from IWC which is over 10 years of age, t...

Thanks Bill. Regarding the pump and gauge.....

 By: ppalasthira : March 11th, 2008-15:01
I should really explain the dial and hands first before I get to the pump. The yellow inner ring is just a rotating dive time display. The outer ring displays the depth scale in meters. The yellow hand is the maximum depth indicator. The white hand is the...

Sounds like a definitive answer from an owner.

 By: Bill : March 11th, 2008-15:07
Hi Pana, Thanks for the explanation. But I guess unless you see it action it is hard to appreciate the complexity of the watch. Thanks for sharing the details. Bill

Thanks...

At the AD, the rep was explaining all the functions to me. I just got so confused and actually asked him - "Ok, lets get straight to the point, what is the significance of this watch?" He replied - "Its the world's first mechanical watch that is equipped ...

I watched the video again

 By: Bill : March 11th, 2008-15:20
Hi Pana, It is absolutely clear after your explanation. I did not see the second yellow marking the max depth arrow underneath the white one the first time round as I did not know what I was actually looking at. Crystal clear now thanks again. Bill

interesting...
