Things we do for love: Part #1

Dec 21, 2010,16:22 PM

The things we do for love?!

When a man (or a woman) is in love we do a lot stupid and irrational thing.

Some times it pays, some time it’s not… But, we do them anyway!

We do them because of this unexplainable feeling we have in our chest and we try to fulfil that feeling no matter what…

This story started several years ago: I read a post in this forum (can’t remember if it was Nicolas or Jerome’s post) about a strange looking watch called Deep Sea Alarm.

Alarm? Memovox? I love memovox! Need to know more!

But the watch looked a bit strange with big yellow marks on the bezel.

After a while this watch popped up more often in the forum and other places…

Deep Sea Alarm… It’s a nice cool name…

The watch started to grow on me and grow big time!

Soon I got obsessed!

You know the steps: From the moment you see her, you start get curious, you feel the desire, and suddenly you are obsessed with her,
almost can’t think about anything else.

And finally one day she decides to follow you home!

smile

The Deep Sea Alarm – US version.

So after a long hunt – and the last six month a very intense hunt, she finds her way to my door!

As you can see the bezel and crowns are not original.

That will be hard to find, but let’s start from the beginning.

Earlier this year I found the box.

Actually, I found the box and papers.

The strap that came with the watch matches the bezel marks well, but it’s not original.

Hm, what could fit better then an NOS Tropical strap?

Wait, the buckle does not feel right.

Even if it’s the buckle the strap came with, I think this one would fit better.

Yes, much better!

The Diving motif is still alive!

Ait she beautiful?!

smile

But, what to do about the crowns and bezel?

With a helping hand from a dear friend I managed to locate the parts…

The things we do for love?

Well, I travelled thru cold, snow and winter storms over 1500 KM to get them!

And once there I was lucky to meet old and new friends!

Guys, thank you for a great GTG and thank you Nicolas for arranging it!

Really good to meet you all!

What a feeling to come in from the cold to a place of a lot of warm hearted watch lovers!

smile

OK, now I have the parts! Note the different shaped crowns.

Now I only need to get home, give the watch to my watchmaker and get it fixed…

NOT that easy! Sunday, all Paris airports closed! Monday most flight cancelled…

Among them, mine. After a lot of hustle I manage to change to another flight but that one will only take me two third of the distance.

Last 500 KM I had to take the train, but in wind, snow and very cold that is easier said then done.

A trip that should take six hours took in the end over twenty hours…

Now the last step of my journey is still ahead of me before I can fully enjoy my new grail!

To part from her again after finally finding her and to give to the watchmaker for change of bezel and crowns.

Sadly this often takes a long time.

But hopefully in not to many weeks/months I will be able to write the Part #2 – To live with a Deep Sea Alarm on my wrist!

smile

So what did I do for the love of a watch?

I travelled over 3000 KM and I am still not at the finish line…

But what a sweet ride!

smile

Best, and to be continued.

Blomman

I was fortunate enough to actually hold the watch in my "hands" and man is she sweet. Looks even better with the new bezel. It was watch bezel changing time last weekend. Best regards, George

And you amazed me a lot, on this one. You have an unbelievable ability to find those rare birds. When I get mine back, we'll try to make a photo session. What do you do for the new year's day? Aaah, you won't believe me, but I found a " Reverso " original...
