Master Compressor Memovox - water resistance information
Dec 11, 2009,09:02 AM
Hi all,
A question was posted on another forum regarding the water resistance of the Master Compressor Memovox when the alarm crown is pulled out, and the compressor key is closed (in the safe position). There was some speculation that the watch would not have it's full water resistance rating of 10 ATM when the crown was pulled so the alarm is in the off position and the key is closed.
Since I own the watch, and I am a watchmaker with the equipment needed to test this situation, I did 2 tests to see the result for myself, and I thought I would share them with you here.
I performed 2 tests of the watch using a Witschi Proofmaster S water resistance tester that measures case deflection to determine water resistance - since it does the test dry it is a low risk test. The tests were done using the dive watch program, which does the tests in 2 parts. The first part of the test uses a vacuum of -0.7 Bar, and the second part tests the watch at +10 Bar, which is what the watch is rated for.
Here is a shot of the test rig taken at another time - the machine is on the left of the bench (case/crystal press and case opener on the right were not used for this testing) and the compressor for the system is under the bench:
Test 1 was with the compressor keys closed and the crowns pushed in, and here is a photo of the watch in the machine, and you can see the test parameters on the screen:
Here is the result after testing - 2 green LED's indicating each part of the test passed, and some test restuls on the screen:
The next test was done after I opened the compressor key for the alarm, pulled the alarm crown out, and then closed the compressor key. Here is a shot of the watch in the testing machine showing the crown has been pulled out:
The same test was done again, and again the watch passed - here it is showing the second test results and 2 green LED's:
And I had the printer on so I would get a printout of the results - the top one is with the alarm crown in, and the bottom with the alarm crown out:
Based on this the watch is water resistant to it's full rating with the alarm crown in or out when the compressor key is closed. I will mention that if you regularly expose your watches to water, they should be checked for water resistance at least once per year to ensure the seals are in good shape.
Oh and I take no responsibility if you have your crown pulled out and water gets into your watch - sorry need to cover myself.
I hope you MCM owners out there find this information useful.
Cheers, Al
