JLC Anti-magnetic test

May 05, 2004,08:08 AM

I am not aware of any issue with JLC watches being near computers.

What we should be wary is watch exposure to strong magnetic field which can damage most watches.

Although JLC does not publicise about this, every single JLC is antimagnetic tested and is magnetic resistant according to NIHS 90-10 standard.

Standard procedure for NIHS 90-10 :

Before the test, fully wind the watch, left it for one hour and then checked for accuracy for one minute, dial on top.

The test is based on continuous exposure of 4.800 A/m magnetic field set on the test machine (see photo) between plus-minus 23 degree and plus-minus 5 degree celsius. The accuracy of watch is tested for one minute each of field exposure with magnetic axis oriented at

(1) poles oriented along 3 O'clock and 9 o'clock
(2) poles oriented along 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock
(3) poles oriented perpendicular to watch dials and caseback

Accuracy deviation must not exceed 30s per day for movement of 20mm diameter or more
Accuracy deviation must not exceed 45s per day for movement of less than 20mm.

Watch which deviated more than the standard or stops completely is rejected.

ps. This means your JLC watch can expose to reasonable magnetic field for daily use - Do not put your JLC next to a strong magnet

Is it OK to place my JLC near a computer???

Will my JLC Master Moon get hurt if I place it near to my desktop computer? Usually when I am in my office room, I take my JLC off and unaware until now that I have been placing it either near my desktop computer or my laptop (I usually have both computer...

Don't know about the Master Moon but...

...my Master UltraThin got magnetized twice in the past year. I am not aware of wearing it while near to any strong magnetic field and non of my other watches suffer the same problem (fingers crossed ) so far. My honest guess is that it will be OK to wear...

Not a big problem...>

The computer itself is no problem. It is the CRT display that have an electromagnetic field around it. This is not that strong that it's likely that your watch would be affected by it. And if you are using a TFT LCD display you are completely safe. /Erik

Hi Jaw By medical imaging equipment , you are probably referring to CT scanners and MRI equipment. Will you be affected if you work in facilities with these or must you actually b in the machines having a scan done to be affected ?? Worried

I believe you can.......

SaiTiang, The vicinity of powerful magnets in MRI machines are detrimental to watches. Older 1.5 Tesla machines are being phased out in Singapore. Most are now 2.0 Tesla instruments and there is even a 3.0 Tesla research MRI at the Neurological Research I...
