in Vietnam. Even the mosquitos ran. I was able to purchase them in Pleiku RVN. Later in tobacco shops in Chicago. I smoked them off and on until I quit smoking back 1988.

Gauloises just became a lot less French

 By: KMII : November 29th, 2016-19:25
Even for a non-smoker like myself Gauloises always had a certain something as a brand. In my completely random musings of what I would smoke if I were ever to do so, it came close to the top (not quite the cool of Filter 57 for me but then only Damjan and...

A sad day indeed! [nt]

Getting a bit nostalgic now...

Wait, I think you have just made me much older.

I was maybe 13 when Filter 57 was 'in'. I have never had one myself so can't attest to that. But, this post also makes me a bit nostalgic...

Filter 57 has been in and out before our times :)

 By: KMII : November 29th, 2016-22:01
By the time I was contemplating the issue the brand was so far out that it was cool again. The producer tried several times to switch the smokers to something else and to kill the brand but they were so fiercely loyal that it turned out to be impossible. ...

Sad news. I will try to find better ads on this cigarette brand, because this one...

Doesn' t give justice to French.... Best, Nicolas

By all means :)

It was the middle of the night and neither google nor myself were not at our best Feel free to replace it in the original post!

Have a look at this one...

 By: amanico : November 30th, 2016-22:27
Found on the net. Don't know who to credit for that one. ...

Brilliant!

 By: KMII : November 30th, 2016-22:31
Can you edit it into my original post? Pleeeease?

Done. [nt]

I must say that best cigs out there for me are Gitanes and Camel without filter As for filter 57 do you remember how uniquely they were packed....upside down in pack And there was good joke about Filter 57 and cops back then Also I would mention another c...

Filter 160???

 By: KMII : November 30th, 2016-00:33
Must have been before my time As for packing - probably so that miners and factory workers did not have to wash their hands before smoking That\'s what i call well designed

Yup that was the story [nt]

That's always sad when people lose their job. I never smoke but I always keep in my Gauloise like this

 By: Alkiro1 : November 30th, 2016-00:12
And the French emblematic smoker is probably Serge Gainsbourg ;-) Best wishes Alkiro ...

The packaging is simply cool :)

Remember reading in a book a long time ago, how smoking never was cool - it was just smokers who were cool. Hence so many young people taking it up (sadly the coolness did not naturally come with it ). Thanks for the pictures - these are great!

Thanks :)

Perhaps they need to get an A.O.C. certificate?!

AOC? [nt]

 By: KMII : November 30th, 2016-12:55

Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée.

 By: TheMadDruid : November 30th, 2016-14:45
The name (Gauloises) could not be used unless the cigarettes came from a specific place in France, where they always came from.

I smoked my first,

in Vietnam. Even the mosquitos ran. I was able to purchase them in Pleiku RVN. Later in tobacco shops in Chicago. I smoked them off and on until I quit smoking back 1988.

I smoked them, and Gitanes, my first trip to Europe

44 years ago. They made Camels seem like Newports.

I'll out myself as a non-smoker...

 By: KMII : November 30th, 2016-22:02
Am I correct in assuming they very strong? I.e. Like a pterodactyl to a chicken?

A very fair comparison. [nt]

Amongst the three or four...

 By: KMII : December 1st, 2016-20:24
Cigs I have tried, one was an ex-Soviet K2 - which seemed like a 1987 Chernobyl vintage, glowing in the dark even before being lit

I'm laughing!

 By: TheMadDruid : December 2nd, 2016-07:27
Sounds like perhaps you might have refrained from that one.

The only way to know was to do what you did.

 By: TheMadDruid : December 2nd, 2016-13:46
Experiences can kick you in the ass sometimes.

That's true :)

 By: KMII : December 2nd, 2016-23:42
And it was certainly memorable enough that I feel it 20 years later

LOL

 By: KMII : November 30th, 2016-22:00
Well, the French had plenty of time to do anti-mosquito field testing there

Remember this French trio?

Prost Peugeot Gaulouises ...

Oh Yes! [nt]

 By: amanico : December 1st, 2016-12:49

Very cool!

 By: KMII : December 1st, 2016-14:41
Thanks for bringing that up!
